Say it ain’t so…
Phil Harris was a phenomenon. Anyone who had the pleasure of enjoying Captain Phil Harris and his Cornelia Marie crew on on Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch,” instantly realized they were dealing with a man’s man. In an age of reality TV, along comes a breath of fresh air who is actually real. The guy was as tough as they came, began working on fishing boats at the age 7, and grew to become a captain who was firm with his crew, but also incredibly fair. Harris possessed a passion, energy and sense of humor that were infectious–he would furrow your brow at one moment, and provide for a jaw drop the next. He will truly be missed.
Suffering from a massive stroke on January 29, it seemed this natural born fighter would continue to fight his way through surgery and recovery; however, a statement released yesterday on the Cornelia Marie site by his sons Jake and Josh, disclosed the passing of the cultural icon: “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad – Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end…for us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down.”
Fortunately, for fans of Cap’n Harris there are some enjoyable moments that can be relived via videos, TV and DVD. Discovery has also put together a nice tribute and message board to offer condolences to Phil’s family, friends and the crew of Cornelia Marie.
