Kids golf is sort of like adult golf, only with less beer and the golf cart is optional. In my mind, I always pictured golfing with kids to be something like playing the mini putt golf course in Happy Gilmour complete with the ball-spitting clown-hole-from-hell. However, the kids are out there on the green learning how to golf just like the adults. Junior golf is the official term and is defined as anyone who is below 19 years of age that has played at least one round of golf.
If you want to get your children interested in golf, the best place to start is with mini putt. Not only is it designed to be interesting for children, the clubs are also small enough for kids to get a good handle on them while improving their hand-eye coordination. Mini putt is a good way to teach the basics of the game, especially with children in kindergarten or the early primary grades. They can have fun learning to count the number of strokes per hole and the meaning of terms like “hole in one” and “birdie”.
Initially, children may have to grasp the fact that the winner of the match isn’t who finishes first (i.e. golf is not a race) but who has the fewest amount of strokes at the end of the day. Older children can visit driving ranges and learn the art of the swing and improving their drive before they take to an actual golf course.
Golf is a good outlet for kids; it’s much better for them to be learning about life out on the golf course than getting into mischief downtown or at the local mall with their friends. Even if your child isn’t the next Tiger Woods, golfing could become a career for them or a cool way for the two of you to bond for the rest of your life. You can enjoy teaching golf instructions to your kids and who knows, maybe the student will surpass the teacher and they’ll be showing you their best golf tips in a few years.
