Iron Man rocks out with AC/DC?

ac-iron-1Now, this is the oddest thing I’ve seen in a while. Just yesterday I was penning the first draft of the Thursday Throwback lamenting the loss of the movie tie-in soundtrack album. This was an 80’s staple, where an album of songs were piled together to celebrate a particular film. The Top Gun soundtrack is probably the most famous example of this.

Another great example is the Prince Batman album of 1989. Prince came in and (in reportedly a week) banged out an entire album to support Tim Burton’s maiden voyage with the Dark Knight. This album included such classics as Electric Chair, Partyman, and the really, really awesome Bat Dance. Bat Dance was the jam in June of ‘89, and you can see why.

It’s been a while since a single band was brought in to contribute all the songs to a major tentpole summer release. If I’m not mistaken, Batman ‘89 was that last attempt. But now comes news that AC/DC will be releasing an entire album dedicated to Iron Man 2. At first I was excited.

The only problem is, none of the songs are new. They’re all classic AC/DC stuff like Highway to Hell.

What’s that all about? I mean, why bother? I guess it’s better than getting a bunch of new bands to do covers of classic AC/DC, but I’m missing something here. What is the point of releasing an AC/DC greatest hits album with Iron Man 2? How does that generate excitement for the new Iron Man film? Which executive thought this was a good idea? This is like when they attach some aging band to roll out and perform a greatest hit for the Super Bowl halftime show.

They released a video which basically incorporates a live performance with footage we mostly saw in the original trailer. Oh, and it has some color correction to add Iron Man colors into the concert footage, so it’s connected. I guess.

The album, AC/DC: Iron Man 2 will be released April 19th. Or, you know, you could just listen to all the AC/DC you already own and save yourself ten bucks.
