You Have To Love The Japanese

By Mark Lorenz on January 28th, 2010

You know why? Every time I hear about one weird Japanese thing, they done go and make another that defies description. You can’t even start describing the things as weird, you have to make up new words for how bizarre they are.

The latest late-night obsession? A video, involving Japanese men, staring at the camera. Why are they staring at the camera? So Japanese women can overcome their shyness for the aforementioned men. Yes, you heard me. They’re selling a product of Japanese men staring at cameras, specifically for shy Japanese women. Is this real life? Is this for forever? How does this work? Which psychologist or social scientist out there decided that staring at a video of people staring at you would improve your social skills and allow you to live a free, healthy life, absolved of the burden of shyness?

Seriously, WTF? I watched this video, and it makes no sense to me. And that is why I love it. I still can’t make heads or tails of it. I think the people are silently trying to hypnotize you. But seriously, watch this and enjoy it. I can’t figure out whether or not I love the fact that we live in a world where people sell videos of other people staring at you, but for now, let’s just appreciate the ridiculousness.
