Ugly Betty, everyone’s favorite adapted telenovela, has been put on the chopping block. Mercifully. I hope it had its shoulders rubbed, before the head was severed, gingerly.
Ugly Betty was the smash hit of the 2006 television season, earning Golden Globe nominations, a rabid fanbase, and a presence on TV next to powerhouses. Unfortunately, the powers that be at ABC meddled with the series far too much, stripping away all of the teeth it once had. Interestingly enough, Ugly Betty was one of the last things that former NBC head Ben Silverman put together, before running his new network into the ground. The time-slot changed to Thursday, alongside more established shows, to Wednesday, and Friday, in an effort to help jump-start some of ABC’s newer outings, but the audience share never really recovered.
Which is a shame, because Ugly Betty had one of the most diverse casts on television. ABC’s shows have garnered acclaim for being diverse, but Ugly Betty was at the forefront of that, along with Grey’s Anatomy. The show performed poorly in new slots, prompting the question, “Why would television execs move a show that performs fairly well into a new slot, expecting it to do the same thing?”
I don’t have an answer for you. I’m too busy weeping over Conan. RIP, Betty.
