Tonight, Obama will give the first, official State of the Union speech of his presidency. The euphoria of the 2008 election is long gone, but Obama has the opportunity to reset the expectations of the American people tonight. During his first year in office, Obama went all-in on health care reform, yet he never really bothered to explain his agenda to the American people. Obama’s ability to communicate is one of his greatest assets, but he didn’t pounce on the chance to explain his goals and policies in a clear, concise and convincing way. The 2010 State of the Union address will give the president a chance to start fresh and play to his strengths.

And start fresh he will. This health care thing is done, and he knows it. Obama’s going to reposition himself as the warrior of the middle class. He’s going to talk about job creation, tax credits, IRAs and 401Ks. Switching focus to the economy is one thing, but Obama needs to come out fired up tonight. He has to pony up and realize that his presidency needs a drastic makeover. He needs to come out with passion, state the case for his new direction and get Americans excited about his new promises.

Will people buy the new agenda? Will Obama be able to cast himself as the people’s champ?

Tune in tonight to find out. 9pm Eastern/6pm Pacific
