Tim Tebow Superbowl Ad

By Yosef Solomon on January 26th, 2010

Tebow Super Bowl Ad Football
Tim Tebow will be appearing in a 30-second Superbowl ad created by “Focus on the Family,” a pro-life group spending $2.5 million on their message. The commercial will tell the story about how Tebow’s mom refused to abort him when she contracted a near fatal disease while on a missions trip in the Philippines.

The highly anticipated ad has become a controversial issue amongst supporters and protesters of abortion. Tebow has yet to speak out about his decision to pursue the commercial and stand behind his fate.

$2.5 million seems like an awful lot of money to spending on a Superbowl commercial about pro-life. We can all agree that they’ll be reaching the largest television audience of the year, but this issue might be a little bit out of place when it appears next to the SOBE lizards.

That money could've been spent on Haiti or real acts of Christian charity, you know. I'm a pro-choice Republican because I don't want our government making our medical decisions for us. Should my neighbor be able to tell me whether I should get chemo or radiation? Why should they be able to make decision's for my fiancee's uterus?

I'm pro-choice too but really I just don't want to see politics in the Super Bowl from the flavor of the month. Bring on the talking frogs and tits already.

It's worth mentioning that until now, CBS has always rejected ads with political content. They rejected PETA, a MoveOn.org spot telling people to vote (not who to vote for), and a United Church of Christ commercial with the slogan "Jesus didn't turn anyone away and neither do we." It is extremely hypocritical to ignore their respectful tones for Tebow's emotional propaganda over what's basically a routine surgical procedure. My next door neighbor's daughter died because she delayed chemo to find out if her fertility treatments worked, then to give birth by C-section. (Actually, the United States has the highest motherhood mortality rate for an industrialized nation.) If I had 3 million to waste on ego, I could have them talk to football fans for 30 seconds too.

^^ In fact CBS told the United Church of Christ no advertisment tha "touches on and/or takes a position on one side of a current controversial issue of public importance" may air. I am a fan of Tim Tebow, but I don't know what to think about this. It's a double-standard because he's a football player.

I sympathize with Jim Tebow's mom's example of respect for life, and the use of the Superbowl to bring this example to so many persons in the world. Go Tebow!
