How much of a train-wreck were the Golden Globes? I’ve watched every year, and never seen a year as weird as this one. And hopefully that trend will continue.
First off, I love Ricky Gervais. I’m a huge, huge fan of his. But his dynamic, being cheeky and saying things he’s not supposed to, is great when he’s stealing awards shows. Like last year, when he riffed on Kate Winslet and said she should’ve done a Nazi movie. But this year, he had to stretch it out over two and a half days, or however long the ceremony was. And I’m a fan of irritating stars, but doing it just for the sake of doing it is a bit weird.
Here’s a brief list of WTF moments.
- They still have a random shot of accountants holding briefcases. If you’re trying to appeal to more viewers, don’t have old guys holding briefcases. Unless those briefcases contain firearms.
- Ricky Gervais, in general.
- Half of the winners. Like, not to knock Sandra Bullock, but she should die in a fire. Robert Downey’s great, but for Sherlock Holmes?
- AVATAR?! REALLY?! AVATAR?!
- Drew Barrymore, thinking she won a lifetime achievement award.
- James Cameron speaking Na’vi. This is how you know people are surrounded by Yes Men.
- AVATAR?! REALLY?
Highlights: Robert Downey being Robert Downey. That’s about it.
The Golden Globes are the easiest awards to win, as the HFP traditionally picks the stars with the most glam power to get ratings. We’ll find out if it worked shortly, but critics are already mauling the telecast.

Avatar was a greater cinematic acheivement then any of those other nominees. Perhaps it wasn't the strongest in every aspect, but it still fairly deserves the award. I mean Inglorious Bastards was certainly not strong enough, same with The Hurt Locker which had NO plot, and only so-so character development, Up In The Air was way too small and unmemorable to win, and I don't know about Precious...but either way Avatar is just as deserving. And why are you bitching? A sci-fi film from a great director won...that's amazing. Good things will come from this.
