Golden Globes 2010: Who Should Win but Won’t

By James Melzer on January 17th, 2010

67th annual golden globes02

I’m a sucker for award shows. I watch as many as I can every season. From the People’s Choice and SAG Awards, to the Oscars and the Grammy’s, I love ‘em all. It was my dream as a kid to attend one of these star-studded events, walking the red carpet with some Hollywood floozy, only to accept the award for Best Original Screenplay later on that evening. While it hasn’t worked out that way (yet), I still hold out hope that one day the paparazzi will be accosting me in the bathroom at Jack In the Box. Until then, all I can offer you is my best guess for who will win at tonight’s Golden Globe Awards, and who really should win in the major film categories.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

  • Avatar – WINNER!
  • The Hurt Locker
  • Inglourious Basterds
  • Precious
  • Up In The Air

The Hurt Locker should win this one, and it will, if those voting have any sense left in their head. One of the best war movies that’s not about war to come around in a long time.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

  • Emily Blunt – The Young Victoria
  • Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side – WINNER!
  • Helen Mirren – The Last Station
  • Carey Mulligan – An Education
  • Gabourey Sidibe – Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire

Helen Mirren should win this one for her performance, but with the kind of year she’s been having, it will most likely go to Sandra Bullock.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

  • Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart – WINNER!
  • George Clooney – Up In The Air
  • Colin Firth – A Single Man
  • Morgan Freeman – Invictus
  • Tobey Maguire – Brothers

Who should win? Morgan Freeman, of course. Who will win? George Clooney for Up In The Air. Clooney has been getting high praise for this one, and rightly so. It’s a good flick. Was his performance deserving of an award? I don’t think so, but with that kind of kudos, he’ll take home the statue. For the record, if Tobey Maguire wins, I’ll get a sex change.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL

  • (500) Days Of Summer
  • The Hangover – WINNER!
  • It’s Complicated
  • Julie & Julia
  • Nine

This one should go to The Hangover, simply for being the funniest movie to come out of Hollywood in a long time. At least since Role Models, anyway. The Hollywood Foreign Press is soft on singing and dancing though, so it will probably go to Nine, but what the hell do I know?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL

  • Sandra Bullock – The Proposal
  • Marion Cotillard – Nine
  • Julia Roberts – Duplicity
  • Meryl Streep – It’s Complicated
  • Meryl Streep – Julie & Julia – WINNER!

Sorry Sandra Bullock. You may be on a role, but even Meryl Streep has you beat in this one for her performance in Julie & Julia. Watching that flick was like watching Julia Child, not Streep, and when an actress can do that, she deserves to win.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL

  • Matt Damon – The Informant!
  • Daniel Day-Lewis – Nine
  • Robert Downey Jr. – Sherlock Holmes – WINNER!
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt – (500) Days Of Summer
  • Michael Stuhlbarg – A Serious Man

Damon has been around for a while, and his performance in The Informant! was fantastic, so he should win. The award will go to Daniel Day-Lewis though, for his song and dance routine in Nine.

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE

  • Kathryn Bigelow – The Hurt Locker
  • James Cameron – Avatar – WINNER!
  • Clint Eastwood – Invictus
  • Jason Reitman – Up In The Air
  • Quentin Tarantino – Inglourious Basterds

This is a tough one. Kathryn Bigelow should get the nod for The Hurt Locker, but Cameron is in the best position to take home the award for Avatar. I’m going to go with Bigelow for this one, but don’t be surprised if James Cameron wins.

There you have it. Who should win and who will win at the Golden Globes, which is often a prelude to the Academy Awards. Don’t bet the house on my predictions, since I’m just a regular guy with no inside information, but have fun ragging on me tomorrow when I’m wrong. For a complete list of nominees, see the official Golden Globes website.

UPDATE – Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges shocked the hell out of me. Avatar for Best Picture? I swear that’s one of the signs of the apocalypse.

I think Daniel Day Lewis is an amazing actor, and though I've yet t see 9, I know that like every other role he's done in his career, he will put all of himself into owning that role and making it his bitch. I also agree about Meryl Streep, and usually, I can't stand her. She was amazing as Julia Childs.

@Jsn_chrch - Yes, what about Zombieland? Again, horror-comedy gets snubbed. That should be in there for Best Comedy for sure! @Nikki - I think you're on crack! @Jenny - You agree, so you're alright :)

I don't think I saw any of the nominated movies, and I am SOOOO freaking tired of hearing about Avatar that I'm going to make it a point to not see it.
