Neil Patrick Harris vs. Kevin Smith

By Mark Lorenz on January 4th, 2010

NPH-1Neil Patrick Harris is made of awesome. This cannot be disputed. He plays one of the more interesting characters written on prime time, and was in one of the best dumb comedies of the last ten years. So who’d have thunk that he’d pick a fight with Kevin Smith, professional internet watch-man?

I’m constantly up in the air about Kevin Smith. The man is a wicked storyteller, and he came out of obscurity — nowhere, really — and gave us a long run of, if not inspired, really solid indie films for the effort. Sort of the touchstone between John Hughes and Judd Apatow. R-rated bromances before the entire concept was co-opted by the studios.

Only one problem. All the characters. Talk the same. Always. If I wrote a Kevin Smith movie, I’d take this narrative, this tone, and apply it to every single character forever and ever amen.

So Neil Patrick Harris was talking about Harold and Kumar, and made a backhanded swipe at Kevin Smith, calling his casting of Jason Mewes bad.

He was this drugged out mess of a guy that was his friend and so he just cast him in the movie and filmed him doing crazy sh*t.

Kevin Smith, of course, took offense to this, and posted many messages on Twitter, forcing NPH to relent. Aww, come on. If celebrities can’t be bitchy in public these days, then who can?

Kevin Smith: internet hero.
