There’s no reason for anyone to die of 28. Especially when they’re millionaires, in successful rock bands, with legions of adoring fans. But that’s exactly what happened to Avenged Sevenfold’s drummer, James “The Rev” Sullivan. He was found Monday, and is said to have died of natural causes.
Avenged Sevenfold are a hard-rock band, formed in Huntington Beach California in 1999. They’ve since risen to become one of the most sought-after contemporary bands in their genre, winning acclaim and awards — including MTV’s Best New Artist award in 2006. They had a monster hit with “Bat Country” off of City of Evil.
However, people dying in hard rock bands is not a new phenomenon. It’s a depressing tradition as old as music. From Jet Boy, Shannon Hoon, Kurt Cobain, the list is sadly extensive. The Rev bragged about doing piles of coke in interviews, supposedly, but still. Nobody should die at 28. There’s no reason. And if it was from vats of cocaine, then the people around him should’ve helped him.
Avenged Sevenfold has released a statement on their website. Some gossip sites have hinted at an impending break-up, but no word yet if this’ll affect the future of the band. They certainly won’t sound the same.
2009’s been harsh. RIP.
