Orthodox Facial Hair Banned From Volunteer Fire Department

Orthodox-1The Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company has banned the Orthodox Jews in their ranks from going on emergency runs, saying their beards interfere with breathing masks. You know what Orthodox beards really interfere with? Eating ribs. Delicious ribs.

Three EMT’s, Avi Green, Matthias Goldstein, and Avi Gross are alleging discriminating practices against the volunteer fire company, an organization ordinarily held to such high standards as men coming off the street and volunteering to put out fires so the professionals in their town don’t need to be distracted. The men say their volunteer fire department is angry because they were involved in an Orthodox fire department called Hatzalah, Hebrew for rescue. According to Goldstein …

It’s difficult [for the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Co.] to see an organization that never misses a call, 24/7, always is there within two minutes. So that was, I guess, seen as something that was, it’s not really a threat, but that’s something that makes you look inadequate or feel inadequate.
