There are some stories that make some people sad, that just make me go, “Huh? What the hell?” The sign that hung above the Auschwitz death camp in Poland was stolen on Friday. I have no idea what kind of a person would steal a sign that hung above an international symbol of hatred, or what they’d do with it, but thankfully the sign was found.
Like, realistically, what would you do? Sell off one of the most prominent relics of World War II on eBay where people can find it easy? Put it above your house and terrify guests? How would you be able to hide a giant international symbol of oppression? The sign was replaced with a replica shortly after it was stolen.
The stolen sign was scheduled to be shipped off to Sweden. The thieves were going to use a ferry to carry them across the Baltic sea, so they wouldn’t be passing any EU borders, allowing them to slip by unnoticed. Only one problem: they were carrying a giant sign they stole from Auschwitz. That even a monkey could recognize.
The sign was damaged during the transit. Each of the five thieves were expected to get between 10,000 and 30,000 euros for the sign’s theft. All face 10 years as a sentence.
What’s that mean? There’s a millionaire anti-Semite planning daring heists.
Save us, hasidic Batman.
