McDonald’s Manager Told Transgender Applicant, “We Don’t Hire F*ggots.”

By Mark Lorenz on December 7th, 2009

McDonalds-1This is classy. Apparently a teenager went in to fill out a job application at a McDonald’s, and the manager refused to let her leave a box blank that indicated what gender she was. He then told her that she wouldn’t be interviewed. But it doesn’t end there.

Zikerria Bellamy is a transgendered teen. Born male, but been living as a woman for six years. Which is to say, she probably gets discriminated against a lot. Legally, you’re not allowed to do that, though, even at a place as shady as your local McDonald’s. Zikerria went in to get a job, which are hard to come by, and the manager of the McDonald’s forced her to check off a gender box. When forced to, Zikerria checked male, and was then told that she wouldn’t be interviewed.

Then the manager took one step further. After Zikerria left, he called and left a hateful voice-mail.

You went to [indistinguishable] McDonald’s today. It doesn’t matter how many times you go down there. You will not get hired. We do not hire faggots. You lied to me. You told me you was a woman. And then you lied to me. You told me you were seventeen. I can’t believe you. You’re a lying brother. How could you ever lie to me?

The good part of this story? Now the manager is also looking for a job. Zikerria is filing suit against McDonald’s.

unfortunately this sort of thing happens all the time. while there has been some progress for gays and lesbians in America, there has been much less for transgenders. the problem is, understanding doesn't typically come without awareness and education (for example, the leading reason for heterosexual men and women to support gay rights is knowing someone who is gay), but there is little education or awareness put forth for our transgendered populations. which is why it's great you're focusing on this story. let's hope others follow suit.

A point must be made here: "Transgendered" indicates that at the very least HRT is in progress. The story states "living as a woman", which would indicate a Transvestite. At seventeen?, the "Standards of Care" would probably negate initiating HRT at age eleven. Still discrimination either way. TTFN -Tabby
