In a story that makes me wonder what the hell prosecutors actually do with their time, a woman is facing a prison sentence for recording a snippet from the latest Twilight movie. How much did she tape? Three minutes. What sort of sentence is she looking at? Three years. Clearly, she’s getting off easy.
Also, this is in Cook County, Illinois. A place where they have actual crimes to worry about. Criminals other than some pimply-faced theater attendant collecting on a bounty on catching people who are potentially pirating movies.
Samantha Tumpach, a 22-year-old, was recording her sister’s surprise birthday party in a movie theater. An attendant saw her “recording” the movie and nabbed some managers, who called the police. Officers found that she had recorded two small parts of the movie, about four minutes in total, and the theater managers decided that they, WANTED TO PRESS CHARGES. She was put in jail for two nights, where she was then released on a bond, without her having to post any cash.
I hope those were a good four minutes. Like, they better have captured the best part of the birthday party. Because if this doesn’t become a contentious family issue or an over-told story in the coming years with her family, then I officially revoke my Midwest license. And note to self: never have a surprise party in a movie theater. Or if you’re going to have one, make sure the surprise is more surprising than your family members being tackled by a team of police.

Well, it is cruel and unusual to the recording device to force it to record Twilight...
