This turkey weekend — or cornish game-hen weekend, depending on where you’re eating — we have to celebrate the things that we’re thankful for. Like health, happiness, and a constant stream of entertainment from every angle. And, personally, I’m thankful I got to watch Allen Iverson f*ck up the NBA for a while. However, that’s come to an end as he’s now formally announced his retirement.
Allen Iverson was one of the most exciting players to watch for a long time. It was insane watching a dude who was six feet tall blow through forwards who had half a foot on him or MORE, and not only score, but in ways that were embarrassing for the defenders. Like, a six foot dude doing alley-oops over three guys, rebounding and dunking, and killing people with his crossover. He was one of the most talented scorers in NBA history, coming in at 5th with an average of 27.1 points per game. A ten-time all-star, his career was plagued with controversy from the beginning, when he allegedly struck a woman in the head with a chair when he was 17 (the charge was later overturned for insufficient evidence, though). From there it was carrying a gun and marijuana, fights with his wife, and urinating in casinos.
Despite the controversy that trailed him, I felt like Allen Iverson never pretended to be something he wasn’t. He was a tough-as-nails guy who fought hard all of his life, and it wound up paying off for him. Sometimes socially, that gets screwy, but you gotta have respect for the guy.
