RAAAAH. HEAR THAT, BRA? THAT’S THE SOUND OF SYNTHESIZED HARDCORE. Modern Warfare has blown up, stabbed, and shot in the head all the competition from every video game in history. Which is weird, because most of the best-selling games in history include large parts of violence.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas sold six million copies in the first week of sales. Six million copies. Compare that to a movie. If it was a box-office opening, it’d be the biggest one of the year, somewhere around $360 million. Guess what? Modern Warfare outsold Grand Theft Auto in the FIRST DAY. It sold seven million copies. That’s $550 million from a video-game that’ll probably have better voice-over acting and plot than most of the movies that screen this year. Also, you can play it with other people. Suck it, Hollywood. Including marketing and expenses, the cost of manufacturing Call of Duty was somewhere in the realm of $200 million.
Call of Duty is expected to sell close to 15 million units, grossing close to a billion dollars. So, if you’re looking for where the money is now, it ain’t in film remakes and sequels. The best original content is being made on television and on consoles. Here here, COD. Now, let me hope I’m not trash talking to a thirteen-year-old the next time I play you.
