If there’s one thing that we can all agree with, it’s that people like watching things explode. If there’s one thing we can agree with universally, it’s that the world is in danger. You put the two together and you get Rolland Emmerich’s “2012.” And what has “2012″ taught us? People just want to watch the world fall apart.
“2012″ has been riding high off of a huge internet buzz, where the trailers were dissected, played, and replayed again. The plot of “2012″? It turns “2012.” And then everything falls apart, babies burst into flame, and butterflies carry fire-axes. The movie scooped up 65 million here in the US, but overseas, well, it destroyed overseas. (In film, and in account books.)
The film collected:
17.2 million in France.
15.3 million in Russia.
9.9 million in South Korea
and 8.1 million in Spain.
In total, it took in $225 million, overseas included. No other movie has made that kind of bank. Can you imagine that? What other sort of movie could make that sort of bank in South Korea? Not even a movie that is made in South Korea about South Korea with South Koreans could make that much money, even if you paid South Koreans to come see it.
The opening is the biggest ever for a non-franchise property. Which means we will see more announcements of world-destroying movies in the next couple of days.

question to the, apparently, millions upon millions of "2012" viewers: is there an actual story/plot beyond the aforementioned awesome beginning scene in which the world BLOWS UP? i mean, ID4 had aliens to go fight, etc. is there a similar goal for the survivers of 2012? or is it just like, fuck, everyone died. let the wild rumpus start! ala "the road"
