James Cameron has made many contributions to Cinema. “The Abyss”, the “Terminator” series, the second movie about those “Aliens”…and “Titanic”. At the time, “Titanic” had the distinction of being the most expensive movie ever made. And also the highest grossing, as the teen markets weren’t yet being tapped dry in twelve different directions. No, with “Titanic”, the teen markets were still moist.
But now, “Avatar” is looking to usurp the old crown, which has been usurped many times prior. After “Titanic”, which cost about $200 million, “Quantum of Solace”, the “Spiderman” series, the “Terminator” series, “King Kong”, “Superman Returns”, “X-Men 3″, “Harry Potter 4″, and “The Pirates of the Caribbean” sequels all cost boatloads of money. But “Avatar” is looking to blow all those movies into the ground. “Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End” cost 300 million dollars to make. “Avatar” is going to cost 500 million dollars. 500 million dollars. Think of that. That’s 100 five million dollar movies that could’ve probably recouped their investment. That’s 500 times what I will pay you to sleep with your wife.
Avatar looks really pretty, but it also seems like the art directors should be shot. For 500 million dollars, why does everything look so dorky? Why do the aliens look like someone you’d beat the hell out of in high school? Or like a cheaper version of Delgo? I’m watching it anyway, but only once.

this movie looks to be a bit of a mess, but a beautiful mess. a beautiful and absurd mess, that i will certainly see, as well, at least one time. some people like to point at & criticize ridiculous excess & glut; i like to revel in it. think it's why i like fleetwood mac so much.
