I don't know...I would like to call fake, but what I keep coming back to is the background noise from the lawnmower. It is constant throughout the shot. This is something an amateur would probably miss or at the very least screw up. Maybe if they are professionals or used a professional lab to edit the sequence they could get a constant humming....but I'm gonna say it is real. Nice shot guys.

Bill Billington
December 1st, 2009 - 11:39:52 AM
This is fake, here's why:
First notice where the camera is placed. It's behind the batter but not showing his full profile (cuts off just above his knees). Now watch as the pitcher throws the ball. He gives it an easy lob and the ball only makes it about half way to the batter before bouncing (even though he could have easily thrown it all the way).
The ball then bounces, OFF SCREEN, before coming back up. This is where the film editing comes in. The pitcher did in fact toss the ball, but when it goes off camera, it stays off camera. What comes up is a static image of the same basket ball, inserted via a film editing program (Premiere, Final Cut, etc).
When the batter swings, he is swinging at nothing. It's a very simple process on the editors part of moving the ball around through the frames to match the velocity of the swing.
Same goes for when it hits the hoop, this is all done on a computer. The sounds you hear? Pre-recorded and synced with the ball's movements.
Besides this, the two actors do a terrible job of convincing us of the video's legitimacy. I don't know about you, but their false surprise and awe just doesn't do it for me.
Here's a tutorial that shows you how to do the same basic editing technique that these guys used. I've done it myself in my own films:http://www.wrigleyvideo.com/videotutorial/tutdes_pingpong.htm
Sorry folks, it's not real.
