Being located in Los Angeles has some advantages. You get beautiful weather, beautiful people, and unfortunately, lots of traffic. You also get to see lots of celebrities and crazy people. Where am I going with this? With Scientology, you can see them together.
Anybody who has been to the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater knows the imposing castle across the street is the Celebrity Center, a place where celebrities who endorse Scientology go to get soothing massages and e-meter readings. You also know it’s completely creepy. Fundamentally creepy. People are often scared to go across the street. Well, other people are catching onto the creepiness. Nightline ran a two-day segment on Scientology, interviewing high level members who have left the church, and interviewed the church’s spokesperson. Tommy Davis. Who resembles a jittery man-rodent. If you’re going to have a spokesperson, he would probably be the worst one to have in the world. He left the interview midway through the interview, like a tiny drama queen, when confronted with information about Xenu.
In addition, the French branch of the organization has been found guilty of fraud. And was fined $905,000, with four of its leaders receiving suspended prison sentences. In addition, Paul Haggis, notable Scientologist for decades, and creator of Walker: Texas Ranger, has withdrawn from the church, accusing them of harboring anti-gay sentiments, and treating their leadership unfairly and cruelly.
All in all, not a good week for Scientologists. Church membership is declining based on the information one can find about it on the internet, and more and more media attention is being shone on them.
