NET NEUTRALITY WILL BE THE LAW OF THE LAND! (Unless you’re an asshole.)

A cause we can get behind.

The FCC ruled that they’re going to make the net neutral, which is good news. That means anybody, anywhere, can access any sites without the proposed restrictions imposed by companies like Comcast or AT&T to provide quicker bandwidth to sites with more traffic. Awesome. You all will still be able to read Manolith.

Here are a list of the proposed laws.

Under the draft rules, subject to reasonable network management, a provider of broadband Internet access service may not:

1)

prevent any of its users from sending or receiving the lawful content of the user’s choice over the Internet;

2)

prevent any of its users from running the lawful applications or using the lawful services of the user’s choice;

3)

prevent any of its users from connecting to and using on its network the user’s choice of lawful devices that do not harm the network;

4)

deprive any of its users of the user’s entitlement to competition among network providers, application providers, service providers, and content providers.

5)

A provider of broadband Internet access service must treat lawful content, applications, and services in a nondiscriminatory manner.

6)

A provider of broadband Internet access service must disclose such information concerning network management and other practices as is reasonably required for users and content, application, and service providers to enjoy the protections specified in this rulemaking

Sounds good, right? Wrong. John McCain has proposed a bill to combat government regulation of the internet…wait, really? John McCain? He’s just pissed cause he can only type with one hand. And none, if he’s masturbating. Also, Glenn Beck is angry. But Glenn Beck is often angry. Today, at the bookstore, I saw a Glenn Beck book advising me on how to talk to idiots. And he was dressed up in a military uniform, which is I guess how he talks to idiots, like a campy theater-boy. Or just through the TV’s eyes.

    You are a true genius Mark. Do you have any idea what this means in reality? First of all, Comast didn't block access to websites. Comcast blocked the use of bittorrent, a peer to peer application used to share media. The application uses large amounts of bandwidth which in turn limits the other customer's ability to access websites. The worst part is that most media shared using torrents are pirated. So the FCC is essentially forcing companies to allow users to use their networks for swapping pirated media while the rest of us sit and wait for our websites to open because the bandwidth is used by "legal" applications. Bravo, Bravo! Do you do any research Mark? It seems like you put alot of effort into talking crap about those Beck and McCain people, but you couldn't be a true journalist and find out why these people would be mad. The common user won't find out until it's too late, but it appears you forgot to ask the people who manage these networks what will happen. Do you know anything about networking or just that it "makes my internet work"? Idiots!

    JB - Bravo you don't get it. Net Neutrality forces company to be honest about what they are selling. I bought an unlimited internet plan. It's not my fault my ISP oversold the network. Now we will have concrete rules that tell ISPs you have to be honest and upfront about what you sell. And on top of that they won't be able to look at packets anymore and discriminate. You remind me of the person complaining that his IPhone unlimited data plan won't be unlimited anymore. The problem is their already is a 5GP CAP! Now who's the idiot? And the pirating comment? That's like saying the moment the law passes your house will explode. Please do some research and stop being a Cuban.

    Ahh Doughboy, you have our entire staff of IT geeks rolling. Of course this will make the ISP be honest, but you don't understand the technical aspect of what this will do. You are now in the idiot group with Mark. Please please please do some tecnical research before you try and win an argument. What type of law will cause my house to explode. That doesn't make sense. Please explain. You seemed to miss my point. Once again.... Idiots!

    I'm a Comcast subscriber and they do block services unfairly. I'm an IT guy and often need to FTP to data at home - Comcast has made that VERY difficult. I have hosted email accounts I cannot access because Comcast thinks it's bittorrent traffic. I pay for 3Mb down and 1Mb up - period. I agree they should have the right to throttle network hogs, but that needs to be stipulated in the contract - which was not when I signed up. FYI - Comcast has warned last year by the FCC for these practices. Oh, there are no comparable services in my area, so we are stuck with Comcast for now.
