Nickelodeon has bought the global rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. If that isn’t a sign that your childhood is officially over, I don’t know what is.
Some of you may have fond feelings for Nickelodeon from the days when “Rocko’s Modern Life” was on the air, or even as far back as the “You Can’t Do That On Television” days. You might even now still watch it for “SpongeBob Squarepants”, or, heaven help you, “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. But I think we can all agree that this network is the last one we’d have expected to find a bunch of hardcore, death-dealing mutated ninjas, even if they have moved away from their gritty origins over the years.
It’s not as though they haven’t gotten cute in the intervening time. It isn’t like they didn’t have their own rap song delivered by Vanilla Freaking Ice. But those things were so far removed from the original comic book, with its parody of the Frank Miller Daredevil ninja stuff that it was just bearable to begin with. And now that they’re officially Nick’s, there’s no pretense any longer. Look for a new tv series and feature movie in 2012, produced by the guy who did “300″ — which conjures up so many terrible images that I’m about to go find a sai and give myself a lobotomy so I can appreciate the coming Turtles-related media in the proper fashion.

i think you're looking at this all wrong, think of the upsides -- teenage mutant ninja turtles vs. the rugrats, the video game!

Avatar is a really good cartoon, better than a lot of them out there. Nick can do some good cartoons if they really care to.

Woah.. you're way off. Avatar is an awesome show, you must have watched a filler episode to come up with that opinion. Here you're talking about Nickelodeon controlling TMNT, and worrying that it's going to become even more juvenile, but you may want to check out what they're doing with Wolverine, Iron Man and the Fantastic Four. The fact that you didn't mention any of the Marvel franchises that they run in the US shows you didn't do your homework on the networks current listings.

"heaven help me, Avatar: the Last Airbender?" what are you talking about? Avatar is one of the best cartoons to come out of America, period. I'm not saying that as a crazy fan but as a genuine movie buff who likes a good story. You should give it another chance and you'll see it's definately one of the best things to come out in the last few years.
