To promote its new reimagining of the classic 80’s miniseries “V“, ABC will be using your sky to advertise. From October 23rd to November 3rd at various times during the day and over various cities, you’ll be able to see a giant red V skywritten over your city. Affected cities include San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia, among others.
I feel kind of cheated by this. If you’ve seen the commercials for the show, you’ll recall that the actual Visitors use absolutely gigantic ships to hover over the globe’s biggest cities, which freaks everyone out until Morena Baccarin’s face appears and says some soothing words to calm everyone down. And what do we get? A big red letter. But if we’re really lucky, people who don’t know anything about this stunt will go insane with fear over another 9/11. ‘Cause nothing’s funnier than unwarranted panic.
I guess it would have seemed too much like copying, but I’d rather they’d gone with something like what was done for “District 9″ — a series of ads that didn’t directly name or reference the movie, but seemed to be a part of that world. Perhaps a group showing the key Visitor figures, written as though by the Visitors themselves, preaching their message of peace. Or maybe just more Morena Baccarin. In fact, forget seeing the show and just go watch “Firefly” again. *sigh* Oh, Morena.
