People have been waiting for a competitor for Apple’s iPhone for a while now, and last night, they got their wish. Albeit a wish shrouded in vagueries. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to meet the Verizon Droid.
It has taken three companies to design this monstrosity: Motorola, Verizon, and Google. Yes, Google. They have an amazing phone out, too, that I hear works just as good as an iPhone. But that wasn’t enough for them. They had to partner with the makers of the RazR and one of the world’s largest providers. It’s got a slide-out keyboard, is thinner than the iPhone and is powered by the same core the iPhone is powered by.
Even Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt is talking that smack, saying, “Android anticipation is about to explode.”
Helping that this week was an advertisement, completely bashing the iPhone’s failings. Although I don’t really know if it was effective. Most iPhone users don’t know what open development is, and are not lacking from the 200k plus apps being offered. But the prospect of having a phone you can customize like a computer is good. If Apple’s customer service wasn’t psychotic and secretive, I feel like this wouldn’t even be an issue.
Also, when I think of droids, I just think of George Lucas. And killer robots.

Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini has designed a special, limited edition T-shirt, which will be sold in select Gucci stores worldwide and on gucci.com. Extending the message of sustainability, Giannini designed the T-shirt using 100% organic cotton and natural dyes in recyclable packaging. The design features the official HOME logo in which Giannini has integrated the iconic Gucci “GG” symbol, while the back includes the names of each country featured in the film. A white canvas bag with the HOME logo in gold accompanies the T-shirt. On sale from May 25 the T-shirt will be available in both men’s and women’s sizes, with all profits donated to Goodplanet.org, a non-profit association created by Yann Arthus-Bertrand in 2005. Frida Giannini said, “Anyone who watches this film will not fail to be deeply moved by the incredible imagery captured by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. It is a truly remarkable call to action for all us to play a part in protecting the planet for the generations to come.”

The Verizon Droid Phone is obviously something that apple has got to pay attention to and I'm sure this phone will be a defining moment in the mobile world.

Its funny you should say the word 'droid' makes you think of George Lucas... He owns the word. So for the record the good guys are Google, Verizon, and Motorola. The bad guys are Apple AND George Lucas. And with George Lucas I have to segue to Google and address the fact that Google is sort of in that awkward phase the Empire was in before it went all order 66 on everybody. All it takes is one fucked up figurehead and Google will be Apple.

cool with some added competition, hopefully that will turn into cheaper prices & additional innovation. doubt i'll be switching from my iPhone anytime soon -- thing is amaazing -- but if the folks at Google, Verizon & Motorola think they can topple the king, be my guest. i'd love to see something better plus i'm sure apple was getting lonely at the top.
