Weekend Movie Alert: “Where The Wild Things Are” and “Black Dynamite”

By Akela Talamasca on October 16th, 2009

wilddynamiteGentlemen and ladies, if you are, it’s time. Time once again to speculate about the movies opening this weekend: Will they rock? Will they suck? Will they be worth the overcharge that you have to pay to see them? I’ll answer that last one: No! They never are! But they might be fun anyway. This time around, let’s take a look at “Where The Wild Things Are” and “Black Dynamite”.

First up, Spike Jonze returns to screw with all our heads again. Remember “Being John Malkovich“? Remember “Adaptation“? This will be like that, but with your childhood memories of the “Wild Things” children’s book wrapped around the offending member like a condom. Don’t get me wrong: I’m totally excited to see this movie. Jonze has a way of providing his viewers full immersion; you will absolutely be IN his world for as long as he wants you to be. But will you be the same afterward? That’s the question here. More to the point: Will you still be able to read the original after seeing the movie? Go read it right now, then go see it, and let me know what you thought.

Next up, “Black Dynamite”, featuring the guy who was “Spawn”. That’s selling his career short, of course, but that’s the last thing I remember seeing him in. Regardless, if you haven’t heard of this film, it’s a modern-made Blacksploitation flick, right down to the simulated film grain and cinematography. It’s gonna be good, let’s just face it. Because if you see it and think it’s stupid, then they’ve done their job. If you get into it and love it, then they win. No matter how you walk out of the theater after seeing this movie, it’s Mission Accomplished for the creative team. So, first “Grindhouse” and now this. Are the 60’s and 70’s coming back? And if they are, is that a good thing?
