ESPN Magazine has decided to switch it up this month by mounting a direct challenge to Sports Illustrated’s popular Swimsuit Edition with what they are calling their “Body Issue.” Out on newsstands this Friday (October 9), the first annual Body Issue will feature a number of popular and successful, athletes posing, tastefully, completely in the nude. The idea is to demonstrate to readers what the body of a top athlete looks like (versus SI’s Swimsuit Edition which lets us know what hot models in bikinis or paint look like). Rumored to be in the lineup? Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings Running Back), Serena Williams (tennis), Gina Carano (MMA), Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), Clair Bevilacqua (Australian Surfer), Carl Edwards (NASCAR), Lolo Jones (Olympic Runner) and Sarah Reinersten (Amputee Ironman Triathlete).

As of now, sources are pointing toward Serena Williams to make the cover, but others have reported either Sarah Reinersten or Gina Carano as well. Leaked magazine covers are below.

Tough choice. I think the Serena cover looks gorgeous, but the Sarah R. not only looks nice, but it looks unique as well. Talk about an Iron Woman. At any rate, I think the ESPN issue is a good idea, and definitely more "real" that SI. Would like to see it when it is finally out. Best, and keep on blogging.

I agree, the Sarah Reinersten cover is very original, and she looks great too. Would be pretty cool if they picked that one.

It seems fitting that this male writer only featured the female covers. Carl Edwards (NASCAR) is the best overall!

And the writer forgot to mention that skier Kristi Leskinen is also in the issue - she is the same woman that called out TO on that celebrity fitness show. There are Oilers in this magazine. I can not find it anywhere in Edmonton. Does anyone know where I can find it? - Carla

I like the Sarah Reinersten, not only because she's a great athlete who looks great but because she happens to be an amputee who hasn't let losing a limb stop her. It would be a tremendous - revolutionary even - statement on ESPN's part to put her on the cover and show the world that physical the obsession with physical "perfection" misses the point - beauty is where you find it and she is one beautiful woman.
