Anyone who’s ever had the experience of ambling along in the snow and suddenly sinking up to their hips can relate to this video. A skier was buried alive for four and a half minutes when a routine charge down the slopes went bad, causing a minor avalanche. His friends eventually rescued him, and the video is pretty scary.
Now, I’m not a skier. Not big into being cold in general, and the last time I went to see snow in Reno, NV I fell off my toboggan and plunged head-first into a bank of the white stuff. I’d go so far as to say that that was the most pain I’ve ever felt in my face, as my tissues quickly froze into a hideous death mask. Needless to say, I’ve been a little reluctant to repeat the experience.
So watching this little video was like reliving that moment, only a little nicer, because when I did it, I wasn’t whimpering like a tiny puppy left alone for the first time, like the dude with the helmet-cam does. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I’m more manly than he was, not by a long shot. What non-skiers don’t know is that when the avalanche stops running and settles in around you, it feels like quick-setting concrete. There is no chance at all of digging yourself out. So yeah, if I had been in the same situation as this guy, completely immobile, frozen, and running out of air, I’d be shrieking like a cat on fire … once they dug me out.
Though honestly, being roasted alive would be far more pleasurable to me. I’m from Hawai’i originally; I’m just sayin’.
