Toyota announced earlier today that 3.8 million vehicles will be recalled after reports showed the drivers floormat could cause the accelerator pedal to get stuck. This will be the largest recall in Toyota’s history and includes various models including Camry’s Prius and even several Lexus models as well.

Federal officials are urging Toyota drivers, with Camry sedans from 2007-2010 and Prius models from 2004-2009, to remove their floor mats. It remains unclear which Lexus models have been reported as of yet.

The transportation secretary Ray LaHood had this to say about the surprise recall: “This is an urgent matter. For everyone’s sake, we strongly urge owners of these vehicles to remove mats or other obstacles that could lead to unintended acceleration.”

You have to wonder why it took so long for Toyota to realize this problem. A California Highway Patrol officer and his family were killed last month after a rented Lexus they were driving was crashed at more than 120 MPH. Authorities reported that the accelerator was stuck, but they didn’t give a reason why.

Seriously? Shouldn't there be a bit more testing, this seems like such a simple thing to catch... or perhaps they're just looking to idiot proof things, you never know when you can get blamed for something silly like this.
