I remember being in a theater to see some science fiction movie quite a few years back waiting for the main flick to start, being inundated by far too many trailers. One of these trailers was for “Highlander 3: The Sorcerer”, a groan-worthy prospect for all moviegoers. When the trailer got to the inevitable line “There can be only one”, someone in the audience shouted out “There should have BEEN only one!” to riotous applause.
It’s with that echoing in the back of my mind that I bring you the news that the “Highlander” franchise is getting a reboot. Justin Lin, director of “Fast and Furious” and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” will be helming this hotly-anticipated feature film, which reportedly will focus on the backstory of immortaldom, written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, the guys who wrote “Iron Man”.
Half of me wants to scream and tear my hair out over this development — is there really anything new to say about this premise? — the other half feels like things couldn’t possibly get worse. Oh crap. I just jinxed it, didn’t I? I need to learn to keep my fears to myself. What can make “Highlander” interesting again? Ninjas. Lots and lots of ninjas, and pirates, and robots, and monkeys with swords. There, now no matter what happens, I can rest assured that I gave the world my best. Mr. Lin, if you do nothing else, please teach a monkey to say “Theyerr can bee only wan”, Christopher Lambert-style. Then we’ll call it even.
