young_guests_seek_knowledge_from_the_ancient_bookDoes your kid run around with a stick shouting “Alohomora!” at the top of her lungs while brandishing said stick at your locked liquor cabinet? Has she carved a lightning bolt into her scalp and adopted a pair of her gramma’s old glasses? If so, there’s a slight chance that she’s seriously into Harry Potter — or she’s possessed by demons. Either way, here’s something that might be of interest to you both.

Creative Kingdoms is a company that’s created a live-action fantasy-themed interactive environment called MagiQuest. For $10 per hour and an initial layout of $14.99 for your magic wand, you and your child can traverse a landscape filled with kiosks containing infrared sensors that recognize your wand and deliver quests and clues. There is also an online component, which allows players to unlock new powers and abilities which transfer to the real life game and extend the adventure.

Currently there are locations in South Carolina, New Jersey, and Tennessee, as well as a number of Great Wolf Resorts, and overseas in Japan. The founders aren’t done with this idea by a longshot — imagine a Star Trek-themed installation where you can shout “KHAAAAAAN” all the time, or maybe an ACTUAL Harry Potter game. If this is as close as we get to holodecks for now, I’m saving up my pennies. CRUCIO!
