Lottery ticket hopefuls are going out in droves and purchasing Mega Millions lottery tickets after the jackpot was raised yet again to $325 million dollars. Although this isn’t the largest jackpot ever ($390 million dollars set the record in March 2007), the number of ticket buyers continues to grow. In Massachusetts alone, a record of 3,300 tickets a minute were sold a few hours before cutoff time.
If you’re like me and not really into these crazy jackpots, you may be surprised to hear that a Powerball lottery hopeful won $260 million dollars last week. If that’s not cause to buy tickets for this jackpot I don’t know what is.
But honestly, why do people think that just because the jackpot goes up to extremely high winnings that they have a better chance. Why weren’t you acting like this when it was at $100 million dollars. I do think that the press and visibility of higher jackpots feed into the whole buying frenzy. One bright spot we can look at from all this is that a large portion of the ticket sales go to educational programs.
