Brett Favre Signs With Minnesota Vikings

By The Manolith Team on August 18th, 2009

brett-favre-vikings-shoppedAfter months of waffling, Brett Favre unretired today and signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Most NFL fans have become numb to any Favre story, and with just cause. After tanking with the Jets and the end of last year, Favre flirted with a Minnesota comeback throughout the entire offseason. Deadlines to make a commitment came and went. At one point, Favre committed to staying retired and told the Vikings he was out of the mix. Now, after all the back and forth, Favre inked a one-year $12 million deal to take over as the starting signal caller in Minnesota.

Tarvaris Jackson, Minnesota’s starter from last season, and Sage Rosenfels, who seemed to have a leg up on the QB competition after the first preseason game, have to be pretty bitter right now. Both guys must have thought they were out of the woods with the Favre situation, but Favre Comeback Watch 2009 kicked into high gear yesterday when Jay Glazer from Fox Sports said he was convinced that talks between Favre and the Vikings would continue. ESPN jumped on the story, and by the morning, Favre was in Minnesota to sign his one-year deal.

Look, anyone who follows pro football has to be sick and tired of this whole Favre situation. The guy’s a diva who can’t make up his mind, and he just feeds off of the media spotlight. But putting all the drama-queen stuff aside, Favre is a clear upgrade for the Vikings. With Adrian Peterson pounding the rock and Favre’s surgically repaired cannon keeping defenses honest down the field, the Vikings are going to be an interesting team to watch this season.

Still, there’s something cheap and whore-like about the whole situation. Favre’s not going to go out like John Elway or Jerome Bettis. He won’t cap his career and ride into the sunset as a Super Bowl champion. Will he make the Vikings a better team? Of course he will. Will Favre’s soon-to-be-40 year old frame hold up for an entire NFL season? That remains to be seen. I can’t say that I want to see Favre fail, but I really hope this is his last season. The guy’s had a great career, and after this last run with the Vikings, he owes it to the game to call it quits.

While there is no video evidence, it is rumored Brett Favre has already thrown his first interception as a Viking.

Huge sign. Hes well worth 12 million theyll recoup that in jersey sales and tv rev alone.
