Yo, what up, kid? Bring your lookin’ balls to the theater, ’cause it’s time for Weekend Movie Alert! This time around, we’re checking out “District 9″ and “Ponyo”.
“District 9″ has a semi-interesting history. Produced by Peter Jackson, it’s directed by Neill Blomkamp, the maker of such famed viral videos as “Alive in Jo’burg” and “TempBot”. He worked as a visual effects artist, which is how he got his singular chops for making things that aren’t real appear lifelike. He was originally tapped to helm the Halo movie — based of course on the video game of the same name — but when financial problems forced that film to fall apart, he pushed his flick instead, which is essentially the Jo’burg story in long form. It looks freaking amazing, and early buzz is it ain’t such a bad time a’tall. Check out the trailer below:
On the other side of things, we’ve got Hayao Miyazaki’s “Ponyo”. Miyazaki, for those of you who’ve been in a coma for the past forever, is the mighty genius behind such classics as “My Neighbor Totoro”, “Princess Mononoke”, and “Spirited Away”, among others. His latest film is apparently inspired by “The Little Mermaid”, but not the Disney remake. It’s the story of a … let’s see … a fishgirl who falls in love with a human boy (even though she’s only 6 years old), and then the moon’s gravity starts causing the ocean to devastate the world with gigantic tsunamis and then everyone loses their homes Katrina-style. Seriously, that’s not the whole movie, but that stuff is in there. In other words: vintage Miyazaki. Dive into the trailer below:
