The contest to find the world’s loudest scream came to a close a few days ago in Pattaya, Thailand. Contestants were trying to break the world record for the loudest scream, which tops off at 129 decibels, by Jill Drake of Britain. I seriously hope she practices screaming. And she lives in a residential area where people are really annoyed at her screaming, because the police come in the night thinking something’s gone terribly wrong, then they’re like, “Oh. It’s Jill again.”

For comparison’s sake, the world record for loudest band in the world until 1984 was The Who. And that was 126 decibels. So a British mother-of-two could scream louder than The Who could play. Also, pneumatic drills. And a Concorde jet engine. This isn’t disparaging The Who, pneumatic drills, or Concorde jets, but a statement of shock and admiration. Jill Drake discovered she could scream that loudly during a contest at a Halloween party, which was probably one of the tamer contests to be held at a Halloween party. Until she broke all the kitchenware and Bruce Dickinson showed up, thinking she was challenging him.
The winner of the contest in Thailand was a Russian man, who screamed at 116.8 decibals. Presumably when someone walked in on him while he was used the bathroom in the dark. He won the contest, but didn’t break the world record. Although he probably gave some indecisive newlyweds the push they needed to finally move.
