Why you gotta make me hate you so much, Tinseltown? You are in the business of destroying original material by revisiting it, dumbing it down for the masses, and re-releasing it under the same name as the original, ensuring that future generations will never know of the existence of the primary work. Way to dilute American culture, yo!
All this preamble was to say that Steven Spielberg has committed to his next movie being a remake of the wonderful Jimmy Stewart classic film “Harvey”, about a man with an invisible six foot tall rabbit friend. Steven Spielberg, ladies and gentlemen: the very definition of predictable storytelling.
But let’s move away from the director for a moment. Honestly, I’m surprised that this remake wasn’t pitched as a 3D CGI movie, featuring the voices of Seth Rogen as Elwood and Jack Black as Harvey. You know, where Harvey is a craaaazy fake kung fu-kicking bunny who teaches Elwood how to embrace his imagination and in the end reminds us all that love is the key to life. Original!
But since it’s not going to be animation, who will we get to play the role of innocently sincere Elwood? Currently on-fire career family-friendly Michael Cera? Weirdly dual-roled action guy/romantic lead Gerard Butler? Currently starring in too many things Ryan Reynolds? The mind boggles. Whoever it ends up being, let’s hope that he’s got mime training so as to be able to sell putting his arm around a giant invisible lagomorph. Not that it’ll matter anyway, because Spielberg is a name that just means “money”. The success of this flick is pre-assured. Nice knowing you, original release of “Harvey”. See you in the remainders bin.

Knowing Steven Spielberg the invisible rabbit will actually turn out to be an alien that has decided to make Elwood his friend while here on earth. The reason the alien looks like a rabbit will be explained that it just so happens that the lifeforms from Harvey's planet are creatures that resemble tall upright walking rabbits, and have the ability to make themselves invisible.
