As the first African American cover girl, Naomi Sims broke barriers for many of today’s hottest supermodels. From Naomi Campbell to Tyra Banks, Sims was pioneer in the modeling and fashion industry. After passing away Saturday, the “first black supermodel” lost her battle with with Cancer at the age of 61.
She not only revolutionized the modeling world for African American’s, but for all minorities after appearing in the November 1968 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. Another big break came in the way of a once in a lifetime offer to pose for the cover of Life Magazine.
Not only was Sims a beautiful model, but also a savvy business woman. She attended the Fashion Institute of New York and went on to publish award winning books upon finishing her modeling career.
