ridley_scottIt’s official: Ridley Scott will be directing the prequel to “Alien“, the movie he directed in 1979 that spawned a million lookalikes and rip-offs. Set to write the script is to be written by Jon Spaihts, the guy behind such classics as … oh, he’s never written anything that’s been filmed yet. Well, that’s … that’s a great choice to team up with one of the most renowned and talented filmmakers of our time.

This has got to be what energizes the flagging “Alien” franchise. The series has been in steady decline since the second film arrived. Don’t get me wrong, James Cameron made a kick-ass flick, but because of that, it’s veered almost completely away from its straight horror roots. It’s going to be a hell of a task for Scott to bring back the squicks, but if anyone can … oh gods, can he?

His last attempt at genuine horror and suspense was “Hannibal“, and let’s face it … it didn’t go well. More of a gross-out than anything else, it lacked that incredible atmosphere that permeated “Alien”. I mean, it was thirty years ago, at the beginning of his career … can Sir Ridley remember what it felt like to contain that power? Will the story even be worth it? Oh man, I think I just unsold myself on this movie. Excuse me, I need to make a quick trip into space. I understand that no one can hear you scream out there.
