Banana Republic Sponsors Mad Men?

By Ned Hepburn on July 29th, 2009

In a show famous for its well cut suits it was kind of shocking to find out that Banana Republic will be sponsoring season three of AMC’s Mad Men. A fancier outpost of The GAP, Banana Republic is well known for selling somewhat upmarket sweaters and chinos. Needless to say, it’s sponsoring of Mad Men raised a few eyebrows due to the fact that the suits are nowhere near the Valentino-esque quality of the suits in the show.

This might seem like a ploy for them to push their (actually very well priced for what they are) two button suits, with a jacket coming in at $350 and the pants at around $140. But wait! Banana Republic will be actually dressing “some of the characters in some of the episodes”, according to a spokesperson with the company. Whether this means that Sterling Cooper will be overrun in mock turtlenecks and over-priced tank tops will be left until the premiere of season three on August 16th at 10pm.

This is good news. Mad Men is a great show and Banana Republic is a great brand so I guess it works out. The suits definitely aren't up there in quality but they're very good for their pricepoint.
