Late last week Adam “MCA” Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous parotid gland tumor. The tumor is located near his left parotid (salivary) gland, also known as his lymph node. Fortunately for Yauch, the tumor was caught early and appears to be localized in just one spot. However, he will need to undergo surgery as well as a few weeks of additional treatment. The silver lining in all of this – as much as cancer can have a silver lining – is that neither the cancer nor the surgery are expected to damage his vocal chords.
In response to the sad news, fellow Beastie Boys band mates have canceled their upcoming tour. They will also be postponing the release of their new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 until further notice. Hopefully, though, going from MCA’s own words, this should be a short blip in the band’s storied history.
In a video posted to the band’s website, Yauch said, “I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we’ll release the record and play some shows. It’s a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because i was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later.”
