Michael Jackson’s Ghost

By now everyone’s heard this, or seen the footage. During a July 4th interview with Jermaine Jackson, a video crew is taken on a small tour of Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. At one point, while focus is being put on Michael’s need for privacy, the camera’s viewpoint takes in a long hallway shot. Before it pans away, a faint shadow can be seen moving from left to right, framed within a distant doorway.

People love this kind of thing. “It’s Michael’s ghost, haunting the place he loved!” But my very first thought while watching the footage was “Oh, someone crossed in front of a window.” It’s pretty obvious that this is what we’re looking at. Look at the strong light entering that far room. Believers talk about the smoothness of the movement — the figure is too far away to see any vertical bob. They’ll mention the eerie length of the shadow — that’s due to the reflectivity of the floor.

Now, to be clear: I’m not ruling out the possibility of ghosts. I just don’t think this is an example of one. C’mon, it’s Michael Jackson we’re talking about. Do you really think he’d go for something as dull as a shadow far across the room? No! He’d show up totally ectoplasmicy and howling one of his old tunes! Here’s what I want you all to try: go into your bathroom and turn the lights out. Stare into the mirror while repeating “Michael Jackson” seven times. Then get back to me and let me know what happens. My hope is that MJ’s spirit will appear behind you, moonwalking and singing “Man In The Mirror”. I would expect nothing less from the King of Pop.
