Because He’s Good Enough, He’s Smart Enough, And Doggone It, People Voted For Him

0_61_franken_alThe final verdict is in, and the Minnesota Supreme Court has ruled that Al Franken has ousted Republican incumbent Norm Coleman from the US Senate seat by a decision of 5 – 0.

That’s right: Stuart Smalley will indeed be working with President Obama to guide this nation toward prosperity. I’ve always said that what this country needs is a government-mandated recitation of some daily affirmations. Think positive, America!

Minnesota must have something in the water, to have given us such interesting people involved in its politics. Previously, the rest of the nation was stunned to discover that Jesse “The Body” Ventura had made it into the governor’s seat, and were probably even more stunned to find that he wasn’t an out-of-control, anarchic presence there. Does local government provide some sort of stabilizing influence? If so, should we be concerned that Al Franken’s even-tempered zeal will disappear completely, replaced by a zombie-like drone incapable of original thought?

That’s probably going too far in the opposite direction. One thing’s for sure: Franken will provide a much-needed injection of the kind of outside-in insight to politics that the best political humorists can provide. Now my mind is racing ahead to who’s next for Minnesotan politics. I’m hoping for Prince.

About time. Seriously, how long ago was the election? November? I guess as a consolation prize, it's nice to know that Norm Coleman will never be elected again. What a joke.
