In Washington D.C., two commuters trains crashed into each other killing four and injuring many more. The crash occurred on DC’s red line system near the Maryland border. According to New York Daily News reports, the Red Line is the busiest transport route, out of the five total transport routes. As of yet, it is unclear whether the other five lines were affected by this crash and if things are back to normal.

Having lived in DC for one summer, I can tell you firsthand that this train system is many people’s primary mode of transit. Thousands upon thousands of passengers load up on these trains daily, traveling from Virgina, DC and Maryland.

Although most of the transits travel underground, this collision happened to occur above ground. Safety precautions are purposely put in place to avoid accidents such as these, however, sometimes it can be one mistake that leads to a disaster. Reports on cost of rebuilding have yet to come out, but are expected to be in the millions.
