Welcome, one and all, to another installment of Weekend Movie Alert, letting you in on the upcoming weekend flicks you can wash your little eyeballs in. First up, the latest Eddie Murphy vehicle, “Imagine That”.
At this point in his career, Eddie really needs a strong hit, and it looks like this might be it. This is the story of a workhorse businessman who discovers that his daughter either has a magical blanket, or some sort of psychic ability; the trailer makes it difficult to tell. It’s established that he’s frequently too busy working to spend time with his little girl, so when he begins paying more attention to her, it’s great at first, then she realizes what he’s all about. Eventually, he comes to realize what’s really important in his life, and reconnects with his daughter. See, I just saved you $10 – $11.50.
While formulaic, Murphy does have the right kind of charisma to make watching his antics enjoyable, and this movie is probably a great one to take your family to, while reinforcing the bonds between members. It could be worse; we could be looking at “Norbert 2″. Check out the trailer below.
Next up is the thriller “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3″, an updated version of the 1974 film which was itself based on a novel. The trailer is the usual conglomeration of quick cuts and sound bites that spells “white-knuckle thrill ride”. Denzel Washington plays a subway dispatcher who’s forced into negotiating with a criminal who takes a subway car hostage, played by John Travolta. If you’re still wondering whether this will be any good, keep in mind that it’s directed by Tony Scott, and that should put butts into seats.
Though it does look like the fairly standard “innocent man gets put into tough situation” kind of flick that made a star out of Bruce Willis, the trailer hints at something a bit more involving — Washington’s character might not be entirely unknown to Travolta’s. How this plays itself out will be up to you to find out. See what I’m talking about in the trailer below.
