Chastity Bono To Change Sex

Chastity Bono, born as a daughter to Sonny Bono and Cher, has announced that she’ll be undergoing treatments to change her sex from female to male. The 40 year old writer and gay rights activist is the author of two books concerning her decision to come out 20 years ago. Cher has so far not released any comments.

Living with the shadow of both Sonny Bono and Cher hovering over her can’t have been easy for Chastity. It’s the kind of pressure that can destroy the person under scrutiny, or it can cause a positive evaluation of one’s self, making one’s identity come to the fore more strongly. Clearly, this is what’s occurred for Chastity. Self-knowledge is a great thing to possess.

I imagine that once the operations are done and the changes are safely established, there will be another book on its way, detailing the specifics of what happens when such a momentous decision is made. Myself, I’m curious about the sexual identity issues — if she’s female and gay right now, is she still gay when she becomes a man, or is she hetero then? Can this turn into some weird legal loophole argument for the legalization of gay marriage? Nah, let’s just leave it as it is.
