A Guinness World Record was made early Tuesday morning in Swansea, Wales. The local Oceana nightclub hosted 2,510 people dressed — and colored — like Smurfs, and that number broke the previous record of 1,253 Smurfs, held by residents of Castleblayney in County Monaghan, Ireland.
The event was organized by Jokers’ Masquerade, a costume shop that plans on breaking more world records: “This is just the beginning of our world record run,” said Rebecca Oatley, spokesperson for the store. “We are hoping to set, break, and smash Guinness World Records for iconic characters from Daleks to Superheroes. Watch this space.”
The final verification came around 1 AM, with the last person checked for full costume. Apparently, no natural, un-colored skin was allowed to show to be verified as appropriate. Though you can see non-blue skin in the photo to above, perhaps it was taken after the verification took place.
Is it possible that all these costumes came from Jokers’ Masquerade? That’s an insane number of ready-to-wear Smurf costumes on hand. Is this a thing in other countries? I can’t even remember the last time I said the word “Smurf”, much less watched it on tv. And as far as the surreality of seeing a sea of costumes go, I think the next record they should go for should be Most Pikachus.
