Mac Clone Makers Awesomely Doomed

quologoGod hates a coward. As a motivating homily, it’s pretty good. If you’re trying to coerce a friend into doing something he’s holding back on, telling him that the Big Guy’s going to frown on him if he doesn’t do it usually shames the friend into acquiescence. This is a saying that Quo Computer’s founder Rashantha De Silva must have tattooed on himself, because what he’s doing is balls-out crazy.

Quo Computer is opening a store in Los Angeles on June 1st that will sell non-Apple Macs. Yes, even given the history of Apple coming down hard on companies doing exactly the same thing, Quo’s putting in that extra bit of hubris and actually creating a physical store, virtually daring Steve Jobs to strike the building with iLightning.

Listen, Mr. De Silva: what you’re doing is against Apple’s rules; it’s right there in the EULA. At the same time, you rock. This isn’t something I’d ever do, or recommend to others, but I love that you’re doing it. You’re doomed, of course, but let’s see how far you get before the hammer comes down.

For the rest of us consumers thinking how great it’d be to get a functional Mac at (presumably) cheaper prices, consider this: when the dust settles and these Quo computers are no more, who will support your purchase? No one. Which means that if something goes awry — and given that these aren’t Apple-supported — nobody’s going to come to your rescue. And no matter how much cheaper your buy might have been, the resell value of a non-functioning computer is still zero. I can’t wait to see how this all shakes out.

Sorta reminds me of this whole GM mess. even if you ideally want to support the company with a purchase, you know it's not a good investment as the company still might fail. Plus who knows what it will look like in a years time. Wish it wasn't true, but sometimes you gotta just bet against the under dog.
