It’s time for another rousing edition of Weekend Movie Alert, where we pounce upon all the new movies opening this weekend, and bludgeon them with a stick until they cry. This edition we take a look at “Angels and Demons” and “Big Man Japan”.
“Angels and Demons” is the big-screen adaptation of the Dan Brown book, and the second in the series featuring protagonist Robert Langdon, the previous being “The Da Vinci Code”. I’ll be honest: though the novel was written really quite poorly, I still couldn’t put it down. It wasn’t so much that what was going on in the story was that compelling; it’s more that the pace just kind of swept me up and bore me along, like a riptide. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty dumb book, but I can’t help thinking that it’s perfect movie fodder, given that so much of what it has to offer is visual in nature. Check out the trailer below.
Next up we have “Big Man Japan”, which may be a complete unknown to some of you. It’s a purely Japanese film, and as such it’s going to be … let’s say … quirky. The story concerns itself with a man named Daisato, the latest in a line of giant-sized protectors of Japan. He gets his growth by absorbing electricity, and then goes on to fight equally-large sized monsters.
However, he’s not terribly good at his job, and is somewhat of a slacker. The populace hates him for being such a sad sack, and the monsters keep on coming. Count on this movie to have dubious special effects, which might be part of the point. Done in a documentary style, this film works on the viewer’s appreciation of similar monster movies of the past — Godzilla, and the like. The trailer looks like it’ll be at least a mindless bash-fest, if nothing else. Check it out below.
