ryan_reynolds_deadpoolIt’s official: Deadpool is the next mutant spinoff franchise-in-the-making. As played by Ryan Reynolds, this movie incarnation is free from the original comic character’s tumor-riddled body, which is both a shame for purists and a delight for Reynolds’s fans.

It’s not known what the plot of the Deadpool movie will be, or who else might be starring in it, but a smart move on Hollywood’s part will be to have Wolverine there in at least a cameo role, to tie the two series together.

Honestly, I’m surprised that Marvel’s going with Deadpool, who is a fairly popular character in the comics, but relatively unknown to the rest of the world. I suppose that Reynolds’s casting has more to do with that than any other factor. The Deadpool character is also pretty manic and unpredicable; he frequently breaks the fourth wall and is aware that he’s a fictional character. It’s unlikely that these elements will make it into the Deadpool film, but how much cooler would that be?

Another bit that will help differentiate this character from other similar heroes/antiheroes would be Deadpool’s non-stop wisecracking. He’s not called the “Merc with a Mouth” for nothing. We know Reynolds can pull off this sort of dialogue handily; let’s see in in full-force for the spin-off. In short, I’m bullish on this, but despite the fact that it’s being filmed as we speak, we’ll probably have to wait until 2011 to see it.

this is good news for hollywood and for me. wolverine was awesome and reynolds pulled off the portrayal of one of the coolest characters - with the help of lots of cgi. go marvel!
