
This is the 4th album by French popsters Phoenix, a brilliant pop-rock group who borrow as from Can as they do Cheap Trick.
Phoenix are well known in indie circles for making perfect “summer” albums; the kind of thing you could put on on an August night just as the sun is going down and the BBQ is starting to get livelier. Their first album “United” and the official follow up “Alphabetical” received a ton of great press but it wasn’t until their third album “It’s Never Been Like That” did they really break through with a totally solid and cohesive classic album.
Upon first listen, their fourth album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” reprises the same summery pop hooks as the first three albums but adds an almost shoegazer feel to their disco-y hooks. The album recently received a ton of attention when they played Saturday Night Live two weeks ago with Seth Rogan as the host. The first single – Lizstomania – is infectious and will likely get stuck in your head. Check out the video here:
